On Sunday 22nd October the Club hosted the first event in this years Harker’s Yard Gig Winter Race Series. The arrival of Storm Brian, blowing through on Saturday 21st caused a few headaches for the organising Committee and the Officer of the Day, Commodore Tim Goodwin. However, at lunchtime on Saturday we decided that as long as the wind remained westerly then it would be safe to hold the event.
That decision turned out to be right as in the end Fifteen Gigs from eleven Clubs took part in a gruelling series of sprint races for Women’s, Men’s and Mixed Crews in the wake of Storm Brian.
It was a tough event as crews on Sunday were faced with strong westerly winds, and choppy waves on the estuary. Following a mass Gun start with all fifteen Gigs jostling for position on the start line, crews raced with wind over tide down towards Harwich, before turning on the racing mark and slogging back into the wind home. The fastest crews completed the two mile course in under twenty four minutes, whilst the valiant crew of Wren (a new entrant for this series) rowed for almost an hour in the final race to make it back across the line to a traditional gun finish for the final boat of the day and applause from the spectators.
Last year’s overall series winners Vanduara from Brightlingsea CRC showed that they have lost none of their form, taking first place in the women’s and men’s races but being beaten into second place in the mixed race by Mehala from Mersea Island CRC. Over the three races the overall winners on the day were Vanduara (Brightlingsea CRC), followed by Aquiline (Rowhedge CRC), and third Record Reign (Maldon CRC).
Stour Sailing Club’s Harker’s Yard Gig William Rose competing in her second winter series with a number of rowers racing for the first time came home in a very respectable 9th place overall including a 6th place in the women’s race and 7th in the mixed race.
