On Saturday 8th July SSC Rowers took two boats and crews to take part in the Round Canvey Island Race hosted by South Benfleet Yacht Club. Lt. Washington was rowed by a mostly mens ‘Supervets’ crew (Sarah being the one woman!) and the Club Gig William Rose was rowed by womens vets crew for the 14 mile race.
Both boats carried a passenger as we are practicing for the Great River Race where a passenger has to be on board and both the passenger and the cox can take a turn at rowing (if they can swap without falling in!).
The weather had promised to be overcast but it turned out to be a hot race, with light winds and calm waters even on the Thames stretch of the race. Both crews had a really good row with Lt Washington coming home in 2hrs 33mins and at 2hrs 42mins – the conditions meaning that we completed the race half an hour quicker than in choppy water last year.
