21 Mile Race Report 2nd July
The race was well supported with nine yachts participating in this year’s race despite the early start time of 07.45 hrs. from Ballast Hill.
As usual the fast racing cruisers and catamaran shot away from the start leaving the remaining 4-5 slower yachts to battle it out in a tight group from the rear of the fleet.
Course number two was selected which is an anticlockwise course and perfectly suited the 10-12 knot wind coming mostly from the north west.
Our Hunter Duette sails well as it is based on the race proved Sonata but is not particularly fast as it is fitted with twin keels so we were very pleased to be able to fly the asymmetric cruising chute from the start and held it all the way to the Stone Banks mark off the Naze.
At this point we were three minutes behind the yacht in front and another 3 minutes ahead of the yacht astern.
It was then a beat to the Outer Ridge , tacking up to Pye End Buoy and then tacking the rest of the way back to the finish line at Wrabness.
We crossed the line only a couple of minutes behind Dolma a much larger Westerly Pentland Ketch. No doubt due to the fresh wind, we were able to improve on last year’s performance by two hours completing the course in a little over five hours.
Many thanks to Ian Pavey – officer of the day and Dave Perrott who helmed the RIB.
